Q.Here's one for you to get your brains around, how did the word 'nothing' become 'nowt' in northern slang, who and where did it come from?
A.Owt is a Northern variant on the old English word aught, which meant anything, so nowt means not anything, or nothing. It was first recorded in 1746.
